Glen Austin

Glen Austin is an award-winning composer and a PhD student at DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama. In 2010 Glen graduated from DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama and he also holds an Associate Diploma in Performance from London College of Music.

Glen is currently a PhD student at DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama where he is researching acoustic, electronic and electro-acoustic classical music composition under the supervision of Dr Gráinne Mulvey.

Glen is the recipient of various prizes for his compositions. Recently he won the String Orchestra Composition Competition at the 2013 Feis Ceoil for his composition Through the Void for string orchestra. In the same Feis Ceoil he received two Very Highly Commended placements in the choral and chamber ensemble composition competitions. He was also short-listed in the 2013 Sean O’Riada Competition for his choral piece Castaway. He won the Walter Beckett Cup for Original Song in the Feis Ceoil in 2012 for his original song Night’s Final Breath for piano and soprano.

Glen writes and produces music in a variety of styles including work for radio, DVD, and theatre. In 2010 he composed, produced, and recorded title and background music for My Mount Everest an independently produced radio documentary by Rockfinch Productions which was broadcast on Shannon Side and North Sound radio stations. In 2012 he composed, produced, and recorded original music for The Kids from Harbour Road (Lighthouse DVD 1) which is a German produced educational DVD series to aid in the learning of English published by Cornelsen Verlag GmbH publishing company.

Glen is founder and former president of DIT Composers’ Society and also former member of the Irish Composers’ Collective. He works as a concert organiser and administrator. In 2011 he organised the first ever DIT Composers’ Concert which was held in the Pepper Canister Church in Dublin. He organised the 2012 National Contemporary Music Student Marathon Day which was held in DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama.

Glen’s music has been performed by Cora Venus Lunny and Kate Ellis, Elaine Clark and David James, Kathleen McPhail, Deirdre Reddy, Aoise O’Dwyer, and Concorde, among others. His music has been performed at the National Concert Hall, the Irish Contemporary Music Centre in Dublin and various other venues.

This year Glen will be composing new music for Flute Eire flute ensemble (Director Dr Julie Maisel) this piece will receive its world premier in Dublin followed by its international premier at the American National Flute Association’s 2013 Annual Convention in New Orleans Louisiana on August 8th-11th. In May the National Chamber Choir will be performing his composition Castaway as part of the 2013 Cork International Choral Festival. Also 2013 will see the world premier of his award-winning song Night’s Final Breath which will be performed by soprano Orla Colleton at Castletown House Recital series.
