Music in Ireland: 1916 and Beyond
22–24 April, 2016
DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama

This conference, held in association with the Society for Musicology in Ireland, will be hosted by the Research Foundation for Music in Ireland at DIT’s Conservatory of Music and Drama. It takes the centenary of the Easter Rising as a focal point from which to explore the impact of the Rising and subsequent events in Irish political and cultural history through the lens of music. Conference themes include but are not limited to:

  • musical culture before, during and after the revolutionary years
  • music and politics
  • music and memory
  • music and commemoration
  • music and the Great War
  • composer responses to political changes

    Proposals are invited for the following:

  • Individual papers
  • Themed panel sessions (comprising three individual papers)
  • Lecture recitals


    Individual papers will be 20 minutes in duration, to be followed by 10 minutes of questions/discussion. It is anticipated that selected papers from the conference will be published in an edited volume with the working title of Sounds of a New State: Music in Ireland 1916 and Beyond.
    Abstracts for proposals should not exceed 300 words. Proposals for panel sessions should include a brief outline of the theme of the session along with an abstract for each paper.

    The deadline for proposals is Monday 14 December, 2015. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their proposals by mid-January 2016.
